Silent Knight On A Come Up?

A definite upcoming underground artist out of Jersey, Silent Knight’s “Hunger Strike” released last year really surprised me. Not that it was amazing, or that it blew my mind, but that it was a real solid piece of work in a world of such few actual albums and so many songs. The funny thing is everyone I tried to tell about him was like “oh yeah him? I know him, yeah I see him all the time out at shows.” Apparently he’s been on his grind because I could find very few people that didn’t actually recognize him. Anyway, if you see him support him, he’s one of few decent artists in a sea of bullshit.

Underground Kingz Fo Sho!!

UGK just dropped a new double album (and DVD) titled “Underground Kingz”. I assume everyone’s already heard the single “Int’l Players” Feat. Outkast, (which sampled a real dope Willie Hutch song titled “I Choose You” off “The Mack” soundtrack), so I’m not posting it. Instead I’m bringing you two other worthy joints off the album. The album was good as a whole but like a lot of down south stuff, (and I’m not even talking about the minstrel show that is current hip hop), there was some questionable material. There’s an odd balance with the album, they’ll have an incredible song next to a very mediocre song, so it can become slightly frustrating. Anyway they get my endorsement.

sO.ul V. Wright

O.V. Wright has an almost painfully soulful voice. I guess being raised singing with the church choir will do that to you. When you sing for someone you truly believe in, you hold nothing back, and it shows through the music. That may be my attraction to Gospel music because it sure as fuck isn’t the message I’m listening to it for. But that’s neither here nor there, the bottom line is O.V. Wright has “got more soul/sole than a sock full of holes” so you should go buy his music and enjoy. Also if you’re a Wu fan you’ll recognize “Motherless Child” was sampled by who????

Little Brother/Bobby Womack

I know I just did a Little Brother post, but I just re-discovered this sample and I had to share it with you. It’s for one of my favorite Little Brother tracks called “Speed” off “The Listening” (a great album if you don’t already own it). The original sample is a Bobby Womack song off of his 1972 album titled “Understanding”. 9th did a great job of flipping this one. Also if you pick up the Bobby Womack album (which you should), be sure to check out “Harry Hippie” it’s a great track.

Lee Moses "Time & Place" Re-Issue

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, long, long weekend. Anyway, lets start off with a brand new re-issue from Castle Music. Now I know everyone and their mother has posted this album, but I feel it deserves the light so here it is again!! Lee Moses “Time & Place”, a full-length album with bonus tracks off the many 45s he’s released throughout his career. Lee has one of the most soulful voices I’ve ever heard and is most definitely one of my favorites. Here are a couple of my favorites off the album. GO BUY IT!!! P.S. his cover of “California Dreaming” is by far the best that anyone’s done.

Quick Waajeed Throw Up

Just wanted to do a quick throw up to close the day. This is a joint off of Waajeed's new album "The War LP". Waajeed is a detroit producer and one of the members of Platinum Pied Pipers. In my opinion, he's the one to pick up where Dilla left off.

Black Milk & Bishop Lamont "Caltroit"

Detroit’s Black Milk and Cali’s Bishop Lamont have teamed up for the release of “Caltroit”, an album produced entirely by Black Milk coming sometime later this year. For those who don’t already know, Black Milk is an upcoming producer/rapper out of Detroit who has produced numerous tracks for Slum Village with his ex-production partner Young RJ, and recently released a well recieved album "Popular Demand" on Fat Beats Records. Bishop Lamont is a recent Aftermath signee and an upcoming rapper well known throughout the Cali hip hop scene. So with all that said, download the tracks and enjoy.
